Usage Instructions
There are really only two issues that you need to be concerned with when running the Volume Profiler, Volume Profiler (Cumulative) and/or High-Volume Levels studies and these are Time Templates and Tick Value.
Time Templates
Regardless of the bar interval you are viewing in your Advanced Chart, the price/volume studies use bar data from the 1 and 5 minute bar intervals to perform the necessary calculations. Therefore it is required that you have enough data available at these bar intervals so that the study can do its job. The easiest way to ensure that enough data is available at the 1 and 5-min bar intervals is to edit your eSignal Time Template.
Right-click in your eSignal Advanced Chart and select the Time Templates menu option.
The Time Template menu will be displayed and the Time Template currently associated with your chart should have a check-mark to the left of it.
Select the Edit option from Time Template menu.
If you already have defined User Defined template items for the 1-min and 5-min bar intervals, check them to be sure that enough Days of data are being pre-loaded. A recommended value would be at least 10 days. If you plan on viewing the full 20 days of historical price histograms that the study can accommodate then you will need to set the # of Days value to at least 25 days.
If you DO NOT already have template items for the 1-min and 5-min bars intervals, select User Defined from the drop-down "Type:" menu, type in "1" in the Interval box and type in "10" (or "25") in the # Days box and make sure that the "Days" radio button is selected. You can also set custom start/end times in the corresponding boxes below (e.g., you might want to only view data from 9:30am to 16:15pm). When done, click on the Update/Add button and a new template item will be created for you.
Repeat the above step to create a template item for the 5-min bar interval.
The Volume Profiler, Volume Profiler (Cumulative) and High-Volume Levels studies allow you to specify the bar interval that will be used for data collection. It is recommended that you use either the 5-min bar interval or the 1-min bar interval. If you decide to use a different bar interval, you will need to follow the steps outlined above to ensure that enough data is available in the specific interval you have selected to use.
Tick Value
When the Tick Value Identification parameter is set to its default value of "Auto-Detect", the price/volume studies will attempt to automatically calculate the correct Tick Value to use for the particular security you are charting. Most of the time it will arrive at the correct number. On occasion, however, you may want to override the calculated Tick Value and input a custom Tick Value. If you do, be careful when switching to another symbol.
All calculations are based off of the Tick Value that you select and if you select a Tick Value that is too small for the instrument you are charting, the study will either take a very long time to perform its calculations or, in extreme circumstances, it will generate an error. All this means is that you simply need to be careful when changing symbols in a chart where one of the price/volume studies is loaded AND where you have input your own custom Tick Value. If you leave the Tick Value Identification parameter in its default state of "Auto-Detect", you should not have any problems.
