Frequently Asked Questions

This section addresses some common issues that can crop up, and we also provide answers to some specific user questions:

I followed the instructions and did the import of the compiled assembly but it is not working.

Most likely reason is that your version of NinjaTrader 8 is not current. In the NinjaTrader Control Panel, select the Help option off of the top menu and then click on the About option in the drop-down menu. The About NinjaTrader dialog will now be displayed. Check the version number displayed there. If it is anything less than 8.0.13.1 then you need to install the most current version of NinjaTrader.

To do that, close the About dialog, select the Help option again and this time select the Download option from the drop-down menu. You will be taken to a page on the Ninja site where you will be asked to paste in your License ID and then you can download the current version of NinjaTrader 8.

How do I upgrade to the most recent version of NinjaTrader?

Pull up the Ninja Control Panel, select the "Help" option at the top. In the Help menu, select Download. You will be taken to the Ninja download page and will be prompted to paste in your license key. After that you can select to download latest version of Ninja7 or Ninja8.

How to I create a custom Instrument list for use in the Market Analyzer?

Easiest way is to click on the "Tools" option at the top of the Ninja Control Panel. Select Instrument Lists and the Instrument Lists dialog will be displayed. Here you will see all of the instrument lists that exist on the system. You can remove a list, add a new list, or edit an existing list.

I have manually added a number of instruments into my Market Analyzer page...how would I save these as a custom list?

Once you manually load all of your instruments into the MA for the first time, you can right-click in the MA and choose "Create Instrument List". This will save all of your symbols into a custom list.

How to I link a page in the Market Analyzer to a page in a Chart?

See the Market Analyzer Operation topic for an example. You can also refer to the NinjaTrader Online User Guide. A link is available in our Resources section.

I have correctly imported the indicators but nothing is showing up when I load any of the indicators into a chart.

This is most likely going to be a NinjaTrader version issue. Our indicators were developed using the most recent version of NinjaTrader 8 (8.0.13.1 as of this writing). If you are running an earlier version of NinjaTrader it is possible that there will be some conflicts. Make sure you upgrade to the most current version of NinjaTrader before you import the Harmonic Pattern Collection indicators.

How do I determine the version of NinjaTrader that I am currently running?

Pull up your NinjaTrader Control Panel. Select the "Help" option in the top toolbar, and click on the About menu option. The About NinjaTrader dialog will show you your current version number and will tell you if you are running the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version.

I was changing symbols in one of my charts when a "XXX/YYY" Exception error message appeared in my Control Panel...what should I do?

The NinjaTrader product (based on the C#/Net platform) is a large and complex beast. We have done everything we can to protect and isolate our indicators from resource and/or null exceptions. On occasion an error may be generated but in all likelihood it will not be a critical error since we make every effort to trap and handle all errors from within our code. This means that, in most cases, you can just continue working. If you do encounter an error, we would appreciate it if you could take a screen grab of the error in your Control Panel and send us an email with a brief description of what you were doing at the time the error occurred.

Sometimes when I pull up a chart the HSI indicator is flatlined at the 50 level, what gives?

The HSI indicator requires a certain amount of volatility in order to "kick-start" the calculation and, depending upon the instrument being charted and/or the bar interval being used, this may not occur within the number of bars you have loaded in your chart. There is no hard and fast rule in terms of the optimal number of bars to use, but generally the HSI will initialize somewhere within 500 to 1000 bars. Most of our Chart templates use 500 to 600 bars in order to conserve resources.

I really don't want or need to see all of the historical patterns on my chart. How can I set it up so that I only see the most recent 1 or 2 patterns?

Right-click in your chart and select the Indicators option. Scroll down the list of parameters until you see Most_Recent. By default, this option is set to 0 meaning show all patterns. So, for example, if you only want to see the two most recent patterns, set the Most_Recent option to 2.

I am definitely within my subscription period but this morning I got a subscription error when loading one or more of the HPC indicators.

We have seen this on occasion and frankly have no idea as to why this occurs. However, the solution seems to be fairly simple. First, close NinjaTrader and clear your browser cache. If you have a product such as CCleaner (highly recommended) then run it to clear all of the tmp files off of your hard drive. Then reboot your computer and launch NinjaTrader...all should be well.

Given the size and complexity of the NinjaTrader platform, it is a good idea to perform the above-mentioned steps at least once a day to keep things running smoothly.

I modified one of the pre-installed Templates in the Market Analyzer to add a few new columns, and I saved my workspace when I exited NinjaTrader. However, when I started NinjaTrader the next morning all of my Market Analyzer changes were gone.

If you modify one of the templates in the Market Analyzer, be sure to immediately save your changes in the Market Analyzer...best be it to save it under a new template name. If you do NOT do this then it will revert to the original template the next time it is launched.

My instrument lists in the Market Analyzer seem to be getting out of sync in that the values in the Bars column do not match what I see on a chart, and alerts for new patterns are not being generated.

This seems to be an intermittent issue and we are currently looking into this to see if there is anything we can do from the code side of things. Short-term fix seems to be clearing your browser cache and restarting NinjaTrader 8. You can also right-click anywhere in a MA page and choose the Reload Historical Data option.

How do I save my custom indicator parameter settings so that I do not need to configure the indicator every time I load it into a chart?

You can use the "preset" functionality for that. If you pull up a blank chart and then load the hpcPatternsIndicator you will see all of the parameters on the right-hand side under Properties. At the bottom of the dialog you should see the word "preset". Set up all of the indicator parameters the way you want them and then click on the "preset" label, then click on the "save" option. From here on out whenever you load the hpcPatternsIndicator it will load with the parameters as you have specified them instead of the default parameters.

The other option is to use a chart template. So load all of the indicators you want into a chart and set up their parameters exactly as you want them. Then right-click in the chart, choose the "Templates" option, then choose the "Save As" option. Give the template a name and it will be saved. Next time you pull up a blank chart, right-click in the chart, choose the Templates option then choose the Load option. Then select the template that you saved from the list and click on the Load button.

How do I change the sounds used for the Confirmed and Pending pattern alerts?

In both NinjaTrader 7 and NinjaTrader 8 we use the stock "Alert1.wav" file for Confirmed pattern alerts and "Alert2.wav" for Pending pattern alerts. You can rename those WAV files to something else and then rename the two WAV files you want to use to "Alert1.wav" and "Alert2.wav" respectively.

In NinjaTrader 7 the sound files are located at C:\Program Files (x86)\NinjaTrader 7\sounds\

In NinjaTrader 8 the sound files are located at C:\Program Files (x86)\NinjaTrader 8\sounds\

I want to create a Market Analyzer HPC template for a bar interval that is not included in your default templates. How do I go about doing this?

Pull up the Market Analyzer and load one of the included HPC templates, and then use the Save As option to save it under a different name. If you don't do this you will obviously overwrite the existing template.

Right-click in the Market Analyzer and choose the Columns option.

Starting with the Status column (under the Configured section) scroll down in the right-hand side of the dialog (Properties) until you find the Data Series heading.

Change the Type and Value fields as necessary to set the new bar interval that you want to monitor.

Repeat this process for the remaining columns (Potential, Pattern, Bars, Stop, T1, and T2).

Once all done be sure to save the Template.

I recently upgraded to NinjaTrader 8 Version 8.0.15.1 and now the column names are not displaying in the Market Analyzer when I load any of the HPC templates.

That is a bug in the 8.0.15.1 version. Ninja is aware of it and is working on a fix. Unfortunately there is no workaround that we or Ninja could find so you can either live with the column names issue for the time being or revert to the prior Ninja version.

Note: This has been fixed in the current version of NinjaTrader 8.

How do I configure my email settings in NinjaTrader?

This must be accomplished via the Share Services dialog. To access the Share Services dialog, select the Tools option off of the NinjaTrader Control Panel menu and then select Options. In the Options dialog, select General under Categories, then click on the Share services option that you will see under Properties.

I'm having problems setting up eSignal as my NinjaTrader data source. I get an Error 105.

Apparently only specific versions of eSignal are compatible with NinjaTrader 8. Follow the instructions on the NinjaTrader Connection Guide page to get up and running.

The initial load of data in the Market Analyzer is very slow.

This has been fixed in our v19.06.03 version of HPC for NinjaTrader 8.
